Las Vegas, Nevada

About

Las Vegas sits in the Mojave Desert in southern Nevada, ringed by mountains and dry valleys that most first-time visitors never realize are there. The Strip is the city’s most recognizable feature: a roughly four-mile stretch of boulevard lined with some of the largest hotels in the world, so heavily lit that it’s reportedly the brightest point on Earth when viewed from space.

Beyond the casinos, resorts, and restaurants, Las Vegas is a surprisingly strong base for outdoor travel. Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is a 20-minute drive from the Strip and offers sandstone scrambling, scenic drives, and serious climbing. Valley of Fire State Park, Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, and Mount Charleston are all within day-trip range. The city’s international airport, walkable core, and reliable lodging make it a convenient start, end, or midway stop on longer road trips.

From here, the classic Southwest loop opens up: Zion, Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon, Death Valley, Joshua Tree, and Monument Valley are all accessible in a week or two of driving. Las Vegas road trip itineraries typically use the city as a launch pad rather than a destination in itself, which is how smaller guided tours and retreats tend to structure their time here, balancing a night or two on the Strip with days in the surrounding desert.
